Man Uses Fire and 'Some Sort of Gas' to Try to Rob an ATM. Here's How That Ended...
December 30, 2014
"You need a new machine in there."
A man in Darwin, Australia, was knocked off his feet and sent flying backward early Monday morning after attempting to rob an ATM by setting it on fire, police said.
Surveillance footage showed the man approached the machine around 3:45 a.m. with a T-shirt over his face. He reached into one of his pockets to retrieve some matches and then tried inserting a lit match into the ATM.
The machine exploded almost immediately, blowing the man's sandals off his feet and landing him on his side several feet back. Moments later, the barefoot arsonist jumped up and took off running with no money in his hands.
Police said he escaped serious injury, saying Tuesday that he had used "some sort of gas" to make the machine explode.
"The machine is completely destroyed. You need a new machine in there," police superintendent Bob Harrison said, Australia's ABC News reported.
The same man is believed to also have been involved in a similar incident on Wednesday. It's unclear as to whether police have identified the suspect.
