Police said Vincent, 43, was shot during an altercation with a man who had reportedly been driving erratically before running his truck into a ditch. Motorists stopped to help Vincent and subdue the suspect, 54-year-old Kevin Daigle.

After Daigle shot Vincent with a shotgun, he reportedly said, "You're lucky, you're going to die."

Col. Mike Edmonson said during a press conference Sunday that he reviewed footage of the incident and said Vincent was trying to get Daigle out of the car so that he could help him.

"This guy was carrying a sawed-off shotgun," Edmonson said. "Let me tell you something. That shotgun wasn't to do anything else but hurt somebody, kill somebody."

Edmonson praised the motorists who stopped to help, especially the person who stopped and encountered Daigle on his own and wrestled the shotgun away from the man. The motorists used Vincent's handcuffs to subdue Daigle, who Edmonson said was known to police officers in the area as he'd been stopped multiple times before.

Police announced Sunday night that Vincent had suffered severe neurological damage from the gunshot wound.

"His brain is not telling his body what to do," Edmonson said.

Vincent, a 13-year veteran of the police force, is survived by his wife and son.

"As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic death," Louisiana police said in a statement on their Facebook page.

Daigle will charged with first-degree murder for Vincent's death.
