Turban-Wearing Football Fans Say Stadium Security Almost Didn't Let Them Into Game. And There's an Even More 'Embarrassing' Twist.

"You guys got to take the turbans off."

A group of men who drove south from Fresno to San Diego to see their beloved Denver Broncos take on the Chargers last Sunday donned their turbans as usual.

But as they approached the entrance to Qualcomm Stadium, a security guard initially wouldn't let them enter — and they say it was because of what was upon their heads.

“Three of my buddies, they had turbans on, and it was like, 'You guys got to take the turbans off,'” Verinder Malhi told KGTV-TV.

Eventually they were allowed inside, but Malhi told the station that a security supervisor informed him that they can't wear the turbans if they ever return to the stadium.

“It’s bad, I mean, this is embarrassing for me, because we are Americans at the end of the day," he told KGTV. "And we are not supposed to be afraid of ... fellow Americans.”

It's not uncommon that Malhi and his friends draw suspicious looks from those who wonder if they're Muslim terrorists. But they aren't terrorists. They're not even Muslims.

They're Sikhs.

“Everybody kind of confusing us with the turbans, because what you see on TV is mostly the terrorists, they wear turbans," Malhi told KGTV. "But our turbans is different, our faith is different, our beliefs are different.”

Their problems didn't end at the entrance gate, either.

San Diego police got a call about the turban-wearing group in the parking lot gathered around their vehicle truck, which drew the attention of a bomb-sniffing dog.

And the pooch soon learned what Malhi and his friends already knew: It was a bag they had returned to trunk after realizing they weren’t permitted to take into the stadium.
