Watch: Firefighters Rescue Dog From Icy Pond

A Utah firefighter rescued a dog who had fallen into an icy pond Monday, and a bystander caught the moment the dog emerged from the water on video.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Brian Anderton told Salt Lake City’s KSL-TV that the dog, Tucker, chased some ducks over the ice and fell in because the pond had not frozen solid in the middle.

The dog’s owner attempted to rescue the dog using a rope but called authorities after he failed to do so. Firefighters told KSL that you should never attempt to rescue a person or animal who has fallen into the water from thin ice and instead call 911. They also encouraged dog owners to keep their pets on a leash around icy ponds and other potentially dangerous areas.

Tucker was in the water for about 15 minutes before he was recused, and firefighters told KSL that a person would not have lasted that long.

According to a Unified Fire Authority Facebook post, Tucker is home and doing well.
