WATCH: How Hard Is It to Nail a 1,000-Yard Shot With a Rifle? We Find Out

We used an Armalite AR-30A1 rifle, a .338 Lapua equipped with a wicked scope.

While attending the 2016 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range event in Boulder City, Nevada, Monday, we wondered just how difficult it is to hit a target 1,000 yards downrange.

As it turns out, it’s not too difficult if you have the right tool. We used an Armalite AR-30A1 rifle, a .338 Lapua equipped with a wicked scope.

Our first attempt was a miss, mostly because this editor wasn’t quite ready for the rifle’s kick. With the help of an Armalite instructor, the second shot was a direct, center hit.

The target was so far down the field, focusing the camera on it wouldn’t have provided any meaningful insight. To put it into perspective, imagine 10 football fields with a small target posted at the end. It’s a long distance.
