Gowdy Launches Tweetstorm After New Immigration Policy Announced: 'We Must Send a Clear Message
February 04, 2016
"Illegal immigration is just that--illegal."
After Border Patrol agents testified Thursday about the Obama administration’s new immigration policy, South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy shared remarks from his opening statement via a Tweetstorm.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency recently received orders to release illegal immigrants and no longer order them to appear at deportation hearings. Gowdy was not pleased.

In the past few months, the number of unaccompanied alien minors illegally entering the U.S. soared to over 17,000.

“Based on a report, nearly 60% said it was the Administration’s immigration policies that influenced their decision to come to the U.S.,” Gowdy tweeted, echoing the testimony given Thursday by National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd.

“Immigration laws today appear to be mere suggestions,” Judd said Thursday. “There are little or no consequences for breaking the laws, and that fact is well known in other countries. If government agencies like DHS or CBP are allowed to bypass Congress by legislating through policy, we might as well abolish our immigration laws altogether.”
But Gowdy didn't stop there:
We must send a clear message to potential illegal immigrants that discourage illegal entry into our country.

Current illegal aliens in the US are paying thousands of dollars to criminal organizations to transport their children across our border.

According to a recent Senate report, children are being placed in the hands of abusive and exploitive sponsors upon arrival to the US.

In the words of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, “we could very well be seeing the new normal.” This is unacceptable.
— Trey Gowdy (@TGowdySC) February 4, 2016
A sovereign country is entitled to control who gains access to this country, how that access is gained, and in what capacity.
— Trey Gowdy (@TGowdySC) February 4, 2016
Legal immigration is a privilege this country conveys under the terms and conditions it sets. Illegal immigration is just that – illegal.
— Trey Gowdy (@TGowdySC) February 4, 2016
Securing the border and ensuring the safety of our citizens is an integral responsibility of the federal government.
