The 2016 election cycle has defied conventional wisdom. Well-funded “establishment" candidates such as Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) fell by the wayside as the “outsiders" — Democratic candidate Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and GOP front-runner Donald Trump — began collecting delegates and challenging the system.

Exit polls found that more than half of Republican voters say they felt “betrayed" by their party, and Sanders has won seven consecutive Democratic primaries mainly on the promise to rail against the existing system.
