Stephanopoulos noted that Trump has come under fire from Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for not releasing his tax returns and asked if the American people deserve to see his tax returns prior to the election.

“I don’t think they do,” Trump replied, arguing that he his undergoing a “routine audit” and Clinton his a “hypocrite” because she has yet to release her “missing emails” and “Goldman Sachs speeches.”

Trump said he’ll release his returns “as soon as the audit ends.”

Stephanopoulos countered that the IRS has said an audit isn’t a barrier to “public release.”

“President Nixon — Richard Nixon — released his tax returns even though he was under audit,” Stephanopoulos said, adding that Trump released his returns in the past in order to obtain a Casino license.

Trump maintained that he isn’t willing to release his returns until the audit is complete.

Pressed by Stephanopoulos, who argued that Clinton has released her emails, Trump replied, “I know she’s a good friend of yours and that you worked for her, though I know you didn’t reveal it.”

“But there are a lot of emails missing,” Trump continued, adding “There are emails missing all over the place! The whole thing’s a scam.”

Trump also told Stephanopoulos that his tax rate “is none of your business.”

Stephanopoulos worked as the White House director of communications during President Bill Clinton's administration, and he is a donor to the Clinton Foundation.
