House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is sure that “federal research” invented smartphones.
“Anybody here have a smartphone?” Pelosi asked during remarks Thursday at the Mid-Atlantic Democratic Platform Forum. “In this smartphone, almost everything came from federal investments in research.”

Pelosi listed components of the iPhone that she said the government contributed to, such as GPS technology.
“The list goes on and on,” Pelosi continued. “If you want to learn more, look at the Association for the Advancement of Science in America, and they have the full list. They say Steve Jobs did a good idea designing it and putting it together. Federal research invented it.”
According to Business Insider, the world’s first smartphone — the Simon Personal Communicator — was invented by IBM. Apple invented the iPhone.
