Report: Here’s How the Media Have Covered ‘Anti-Gun Agenda’ Compared to Pro-Gun Arguments After Orlando Attack

Here's how media coverage of gun control versus gun rights breaks down.

In the wake of the terrorist attack at an Orlando, Florida, nightclub, the “big three” networks — ABC, NBC and CBS — devoted their national news coverage to statements favoring gun control over gun rights by a ratio of 8 to 1, according to a new report by the Media Research Center.

According to the Media Research Center’s analysis, an examination of 47 stories about gun policy and an additional 10 that referred to gun policy aired between June 12 and June 17 revealed “a huge disparity” between the amount of airtime spent on gun control versus gun rights.

The report found that the networks devoted 65 minutes and 12 seconds to the gun control agenda and compared to eight minutes and 12 seconds to gun rights.

When broken down by individual networks:

  • CBS spent 30 minutes, 40 seconds on gun control and 2 minutes, 56 seconds on gun rights.
  • NBC spent 23 minutes, 20 seconds on gun control and 2 minutes, 56 seconds on gun rights.
  • ABC spent 11 minutes, 12 seconds on gun control and 2 minutes, 20 seconds on gun rights.

When the analysts examined individual spokesmen in the report, they characterized 57 as “anti-gun,” 19 as “pro-gun” and 27 as “neutral.”
