Dem congressman goes on crazy Trump Twitter rant — then conservatives strike back
May 13, 2017
Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-Va.) went on a three-day-long Twitter rant during which he suggested President Donald Trump is “unhinged” and linked the recent firing of former FBI Director James Comey to the Nixon-era Watergate scandal.
On Thursday, Connolly began writing a series of tweets linking the Trump White House to Russia.
“America doesn’t have a voter fraud problem, Mr. President,” Connolly wrote. “We have a participation problem AND A RUSSIA PROBLEM!”

Replying to his own tweet, Connolly wrote, “41% of eligible voters didn't vote at all in 2016. That's our problem. Oh, and Russia. But you know about that.”
On the same day, Connolly accused Trump of “blatant interference and possible intimidation” in the FBI’s investigation of Trump associates’ possible connections to Russian operatives.
“Blatant interference and possible intimidation of FBI Director while discussing his staying on as Director,” Connolly wrote.

On Friday, Connolly suggested Trump is “unhinged” and guilty of “obstruction.”
“First obstruction of an investigation,” Connolly wrote. “Now witness intimidation from the Highest Office. A sad moment for even this White House. Unhinged?

“Out of his own mouth Trump links Comey firing to Russia investigation,” Connolly wrote. “Not Clinton e-mails. Russia. … No stonewalling here. He fesses up. How is this not obstruction?”

On Saturday, Connolly repeated the accusations and insulted the media for allegedly “chasing shiny objects,” meaning other, unimportant stories.
“Note to Media: stop chasing shiny objects,” Connolly wrote. “Look at what is right in front of you: intimidation and obstruction.”

In response to Connolly’s lengthy attack on the White House, hundreds of conservative commenters attacked the congressman.
“Unhinged? Absolutely you are along with the rest of the liberal snowflakes [sic],” wrote one user.

“Quit lying to the public,” wrote Carolyn Fairchild. “Investigations continue BAU & you know it. There is no witness intimidation. If you have to, subpoena Comey.”

This is the first time Connolly has engaged in crazy rhetoric. In March, while Congress was considering the first iteration of the American Health Care Act, Connolly said the Republicans were trying to “unravel health care for all Americans.”
