Liberal raises $1M for Planned Parenthood — people realize it doesn't need taxpayer money after all

Comedian Samantha Bee decided to take Planned Parenthood funding into her own hands recently when she launched the "nasty woman" t-shirt campaign that aimed to keep "Planned Parenthood afloat one t-shirt at a time."

The campaign took off and even garnered the support of Hillary Clinton, a feminist icon and Planned Parenthood supporter, who inspired the t-shirt's message as it was one of the insults then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump hurled her way during last year's contentious presidential election.

The campaign's description read: "By getting this exclusive “Nasty Woman” shirt (and/or hoodie), you’re joining Samantha Bee and countless other smart, fearless women and men in supporting Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County, standing up for women’s (aka, human) rights and helping to pave the way for a brighter future. This is such an incredible time in our country's history. Don't you want to look back on it with pride, knowing that you helped make a difference? We do! Join us and let’s make it happen."

The campaign became so successful that Bee was able to raise more than $1 million for Planned Parenthood by selling her $25 t-shirts.

"We did break $1 million," Bee told the Hollywood Reporter. "Our fans really stepped up — and people all over the world. We're really floored."

Bee's campaign comes as congressional Republicans attempt to defund Planned Parenthood of taxpayer monies as they work to repeal Obamacare and replace it with a free-market alternative. Planned Parenthood receives more than $500 million in taxpayer funds annually and is the nation's largest provider of abortions.

Between 2015-2016, Planned Parenthood aborted nearly 330,000 unborn babies, according to its annual report.

And while Bee's campaign accomplished its intended purpose, the campaign also had some unintended consequences. Given how quickly Bee was able to raise a large sum of money for the controversial organization, many wondered why Planned Parenthood needs any taxpayer funds at all:

Congressional Republicans are aggressively pursuing removing taxpayer funds from Planned Parenthood. Senate Republicans, in their Obamacare replacement plan revealed last month, pledged to defund Planned Parenthood of taxpayer funds for one year.
