Melania Trump's office fires back at reporters criticizing her shoe choice amidst a natural disaster

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump traveled to Texas on Tuesday to visit the areas devastated by Hurricane Harvey, but reporters covering the event were focused on something other than the natural disaster that has left 14 dead so far, and thousands displaced with nowhere to live.

Instead, it was Melania's shoe choice that had many talking on social media, harshly criticizing the first lady for her decision to wear a pair of black stiletto heels. Several media outlets made the fashion choice the subject of their headlines, including The Daily Beast, which featured a story with the title, "Melania Trump Heads to Houston Hurricane Zone in Sky-High Stilettos."

"Spiky pumps are completely appropriate footwear for a hurricane zone, right?" the piece said, mocking the First Lady.

While some joked that they hoped her heels were "waterproofed," others on social media were more aggressive with their criticisms, even wishing her injuries.

Despite that, the First Lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham had harsh, but deserved words for those focused on criticizing Melania's fashion choices.

"It's sad that we have an active and ongoing natural disaster in Texas, and people are worried about her shoes," Grisham said.

This isn't the first time Melania has been criticized for her shoe choice. Earlier in August, Newsweek published a piece titled, "Melania, Ivanka, and Ivana Trump Wear High Heels, a Symbol of Everything That is Beautiful and Horrifying About Them."
