Knife-wielding crook breaks into home and threatens those inside. But homeowner has a gun. Next.

A knife-wielding man broke a window on the side of a home in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, late Monday, entered the residence and threatened people inside, the Greenville County Sheriff's told WYFF-TV.

The problem for the perp? The homeowner had a gun, the station said.

And like actor Sean Connery once remarked, it's less than wise to bring a knife to a gunfight.

Deputies said the homeowner shouted a warning and then opened fire on James Smith Jr., 30, hitting him at least once, WYFF reported.

Smith was taken to a hospital, the station reported, adding that the hospital hasn't released his condition. Smith is charged with burglary and drug possession, WYFF said.

Warrants noted that the victim did not know Smith and had never met him before, WHNS-TV reported.

What else do we know about Smith?

Smith also possessed a green leafy substance that smelled like marijuana and had a prior conviction of trafficking marijuana in 2015, WYFF reported, citing warrants.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said Smith was admitted to prison in January 2015 and was released to the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services in December 2017, WHNS added.
