Boycott Jimmy Kimmel petition soars past 170,000 signatures after host mocks Melania Trump’s accent

A petition boycotting America's "moral compass" Jimmy Kimmel — and his show — is making the rounds after the late-night TV host mocked first lady Melania Trump's accent on a recent airing of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

What's the background?

On his April 2 show, Kimmel covered the White House's annual Easter Egg Roll. Out of the gate — and typical for politics-heavy Kimmel — the late-night host cracked jokes at the Trumps' expense.

"This year was different, though — Trump heard 'egg roll,' and promised to make the Chinese pay for it," Kimmel quipped, and went on to discuss Melania's organization of the event.

"Not a chance she did one thing to help set that up. ... The only thing she's been working on is an escape tunnel," he joked before cueing footage of Melania reading a book to children during the event.

After the footage played, Kimmel laughed and proceeded to mock Melania — who speaks five languages fluently — and her Slovenian accent.

Many people were outraged as a result of Kimmel's comments, and even Fox News' Sean Hannity got into it with the Hollywood host over the coverage of the Easter egg event.

What's in the petition?

The petition's webpage states:

On Monday night, left-wing host Jimmy Kimmel showed his true bigotry by mocking the way our First Lady was reading a children's book during the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House.

In the past he has claimed to be loving and accepting of all immigrants, but he openly made fun of her accent and his crowd laughed along. He even reenacted the way she says "This and That."

Then, he told his immigrant counterpart, Guillermo, that he too could be First Lady. This was clearly a shot at her accent.

Another portion of the petition revealed that upon receiving 200,000 signatures, organizers would sent the petition "to the front door of Disney/ABC Studios," which are located in Burbank, California.

"Let's send a message that these attacks on our First Lady will NOT be tolerated!" the petition's creators urged readers.

At the time of this writing, the petition has received over 170,000 signatures.
