VA-Sen.: Democrat Tim Kaine heads into re-election campaign with more than $10 million cash on hand

Incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), who's seeking re-election, has more than $10 million in cash on hand going into the midterm elections, the Augusta Free Press reported.

What's the story?

During the seven-week pre-primary reporting period, Kaine reported that he raised more than $1.1 million, which bumped his total cash-on-hand to more than $10.6 million.

He raked in nearly $200,000 through online contributions from 5,877 individual campaign donors.

The senator, who's seeking a second term after a failed vice presidential bid, held a meet and greet in New Town on Monday, where criticized President Donald Trump's administration, The Virginia Gazette reported.

He told the Memorial Day crowd that Trump seeks to divide the country.

“We’ve got a president who isn’t ‘for all,’ he specializes in division,” Kaine told attendees. “When he couldn’t tell who the good guys and the bad guys were at a white supremacist rally, he’s not ‘for all.’”

Kaine said his campaign is based on “a Virginia that works for all" and he's focused Medicaid expansion, job security, the state’s economy and raising the minimum wage.

More than $17 million has been raised by the senator during this cycle. The Cook Political has predicted Kaine will win re-election.

What about the GOP primary race?

Corey Stewart, Nick Freitas and E.W. Jackson are Republicans vying for the chance to compete against Kaine.

Stewart, a controversial Trump supporter, continues to be the frontrunner in the race to secure the nomination as Kaine's challenger. You can read more about the Republican contenders here.

The GOP primary is June 12.
