Trump says Pelosi 'deserves' to be House speaker, suggests even some Republicans would back her

President Donald Trump said that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) deserves to be the next speaker of the House following Tuesday's midterm elections that saw the Democrats win back control of the lower chamber.

Trump also said that he could very well get some Republicans to vote for Pelosi if Democrats "give her a hard time."

What are the details?

In a Wednesday morning tweet, Trump wrote, "In all fairness, Nancy Pelosi deserves to be chosen Speaker of the House by the Democrats. If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. She has earned this great honor!"

The president phoned Pelosi on Tuesday evening to congratulate her after Democrats were officially projected to win back control of the House. Democrats secured enough seats needed to make a majority, clinching the House for the first time since 2010.

Republicans held 236 of 435 House seats heading into the midterm elections, while Democrats held 193 seats. In order to have a majority, a party needs to secure 218 seats.

On Tuesday night, supporters at Pelosi's victory address chanted "Speaker!" during her speech.

“Thanks to you, tomorrow will be a new day in America. Remember this feeling — know the power to win,” Pelosi said during her speech.

She added that “more than anything,” the election is “about what a new Democratic majority will mean in the lives of hard-working Americans. That’s what it’s about — Democrats pledge a Congress that works for the people.”

What else?

Pelosi has led the Democrats in the House since 2003, and is the favorite to be elected during the next congressional session, so long as she receives votes from a majority of House members.

The speaker must receive votes from a majority of House members in the new session of Congress.
