MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews issued a warning to Democrats on Monday, telling them to stop looking down on pro-life Americans and other groups or risk losing voters to President Donald Trump in 2020.
Matthews joined the network's "Morning Joe" show to weigh in on the political climate surrounding next year's presidential election and scolded liberal elites for their treatment of voters who feel disenfranchised by the Democratic Party.
The host established his authority on the issue by first explaining that all three of his brothers voted for Trump in 2016 and said he believes voters feel left out by the Democrats. Matthews said voters in the last presidential election "knew there was a great party going on among the liberal elite with all their Hollywood buddies, and they weren't invited. Nobody wants to go to a party they haven't been invited [to]."
"They've been looked down on," Matthews said, "Democrats have a lot of people out there that feel discarded by them, and they're not too happy about it."
The pundit explained, "It's one thing to disagree about abortion rights. We all have our own personal views — and nuances by the way, lots of nuances in that fight. But don't make fun of the other side, don't make fun of the pro-life people. Don't think they are low-brows because they aren't as sophisticated as you are. I think there's a lot of that attitude that creeps into the vote — 'oh not only do they disagree with me, they look down on me for caring about life. Oh, I get it. I'm not one of them. I know that.'"
Matthews added, "Trump played the life vote brilliantly in Pennsylvania last time and he'll probably do it again. You've got to be careful about whose feelings you are definitely hurting."
