Lollapalooza concertgoers electrocuted while taking selfies on train tracks

A pair of concertgoers were severely electrocuted after leaning onto the third rail of some train tracks near the Lollapalooza music festival. One of the victims reportedly went into cardiac arrest.

The tragedy occurred when a group of young attendees were recorded taking pictures of themselves at the Ridgeland Green Line stop in Oak Park around 7 p.m. on August 5, 2023.

Two males and a female were sitting on the tracks when one male leaned back and touched the electrified rail. He immediately became rigid and attempted to grab the female next to him. She then became electrocuted as the pair fell backward.

The New York Post reported that 600 volts of electricity were coming out of the third rail.

Another male in a white hooded-sweatshirt sitting next to them realized what was happening and attempted to pull them off, but hesitated at first, as he appeared to get shocked himself. He then made a second attempt and was able to pry the victims off the track.

The group appeared to have been with a larger group of friends who eventually came down off the adjacent platform to assist them.

The Oak Park Fire Department reportedly said that the male went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to Loyola Medical Center alongside the female, who was conscious when emergency services arrived.

According to U.K. outlet the Mirror, the parties involved were teenagers; however, that information does not appear to have been corroborated elsewhere. The Daily Mail reported that the victims were in their 20s, according to first responders. However, the New York Post reported that the names, ages, and the extent of the injuries were not known.

ScienceABC.com stated that while humans have been killed by as few as 42 volts, the electrical current is what is most lethal.

Lollapalooza is an annual four-day music festival that takes place in Grant Park, Chicago. The festival made tour stops in the early to mid-90s and even held a digital version in 2020 during COVID-19 lockdowns.

The concert attendees were somewhat mocked as "depressed" teens in a 1996 episode of "The Simpsons" called "Homerpalooza."
