'We cannot ignore the misogyny and racism': Stacey Abrams says Kamala Harris is criticized because of her 'race and gender'

Failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said that Vice President Kamala Harris would not face the same criticisms if she were a white man, adding that the expectations for the role are set for a white male.

The former Georgia candidate spoke to former press secretary Jen Psaki on the MSNBC program "Inside," where she was lobbed a question specifically pertaining to race and gender.

"I want to ask you about the vice president, because she has been under a huge amount of scrutiny through her entire time in office," Psaki began. "I think there’s a lot of reasons for this. But I want to ask you, as a prominent woman of color who’s run for office, do you think that she would be receiving the same critiques if she was a white man?"

"No," Abrams bluntly replied.

"No, not at all?” Psaki pressed on.

"No. We will always question the person behind the person, but we cannot ignore that misogyny and racism remain very prevalent in our politics," Abrams claimed.

The 49-year-old then explained that even when misogyny or racism isn't to blame for certain criticisms, each still serves as the basis for disagreements on how the role of vice president is handled.

"For those behaviors that don’t rise to either misogyny or racism, there’s also just a difference. Our expectations are set for the traditional white male vice president."

"That’s what it’s always been," Psaki said, according to Daily Fetched.

"It’s what it’s always been," Abrams replied. "We are not always great with new," she continued.

"But more importantly, I know that if you filter through the critiques, if you think about how she has been castigated, there is inextricably linked to race and gender," Abrams further claimed.

"I applaud the poise with which [Kamala Harris] has responded."

Vice President Harris recently responded to questions on "60 Minutes" about the Biden administration's sinking popularity. Harris vaguely claimed that despite less than 50% of voters under 30 years old approving of the administration's performance, people in that demographic would be more supportive if they knew about the administration's climate change policy.

"If you poll how young people feel about the climate, and the warming of our planet, it polls as one of their top concerns. When we talk about what we are doing with student loan debt ... polls very high."

"The challenge that we have as an administration is we gotta let people know who brung it to 'em!" Harris said with laughter. "That's our challenge. It is not that the work we are doing is not very, very popular with a lot of people."
