Video shows baby lying on San Francisco sidewalk with mother who apparently just gave birth

A viral video shows a crying baby lying on a San Francisco sidewalk with the mother, who apparently just gave birth.

What do we know?

The baby was born Thursday, KRON-TV reported, citing the city's fire department. The video in question began circulating Saturday, the station said, adding that officials were unable to confirm its authenticity due to medical privacy laws.

But the fire department told the station that both the mother and baby were taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

The video shows an already-born infant lying on the sidewalk and covered by a blanket and positioned directly in front of the mother, who begins to sit up. It isn't clear how much time elapsed between the birth and the start of the video.

The mother seems distraught and concerned about her baby, and a man next to them adjusts the blanket covering the newborn and tries to calm the woman: “You’re gonna be OK; just relax, OK?”

It appears as though the umbilical cord is still attached as the mother begins to pick up the newborn. The man reassures her, "It's gonna be fine, OK? They're coming to pick you up."

Others are nearby and attempt to help as well.

Content warning: The video may be disturbing to some readers:

The man next to the mother and newborn who tried to reassure the mother appeared to be recording the event on his cell phone, presumably to document it for his own legal protection.

Citing an Instagram post, KTVU-TV reported that the video was recorded near the 900 block of Geary Street near Union Square.

'This makes me incredibly sad'

Twitter commenters had much to say about the video:

  • Songwriter David Choi tweeted, “This makes me incredibly sad. We as a species need to show more humanity and kindness towards each other. We can do better.”
  • "My God. What have we done?" another Twitter user asked before adding a "SanFrancisco" hashtag.
  • "Truly the most depressing thing I’ve seen from California since *checks watch* yesterday," another commenter quipped.
  • Another user directed his comment to left-wing California Gov. Gavin Newsom: "... after you are done telling us about how terrible Florida is or whatever, mind cleaning up your own backyard? The negative ads when you run for president will literally just be a feed of daily SF horrors like this."

Anything else?

Under its far-left political leadership, San Francisco over the last few years has become a hotbed of homelessness, drug addiction, deadly violent crime, and brazen, broad-daylight shoplifting.
