Criminal unaware that his phone calls were recorded, receives harsh sentence
March 05, 2017
Mike Opelka shares the story of a "stupid" criminal whose profane jailhouse phone calls insulting the judge and the victim’s family likely lead to him receiving a harsh sentence.
Judge Michael Koury ordered Royce Atkins to serve 4-10 years in prison for failing to stop and help a 9-year-old boy after a car Atkins was driving stuck and killed the child.
The 23-year-old Atkins was hoping his courtroom apology to the family would help him avoid a stiff sentence. And, it might have worked…until the judge heard jailhouse recordings of phone calls made by the accused to friends and family members.
