Rabbi Lapin: Money, money, money must be spiritual

We all need money to be able to function and survive in society. Money is important, but people don’t seem to understand what it means on a spiritual level. Rabbi Daniel Lapin explained what justifies money on this week’s episode.

People tend to say that money is good as long as you “use it correctly,” which they mean give enough of it away to charity to justify having it. Rabbi Lapin explained that contrary to what society tells you, the most important thing is getting your money in a fair way.

“Money isn’t made good by what you do with it; it’s made good by how you got it in the first place,” Rabbi Lapin said.

Those who obtain money fairly by doing their work well and being compensated, Lapin said, are fulfilling the spiritual side of money by doing honest work, benefiting other people and being an important part of society’s structure.

He also noted that exchanging money is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s an important way we communicate with other people. He explained:

The interchange of money between human beings is perhaps the finest way we have of communicating information, priorities, market realities, desires, limitations, all of these things through the wonderful world of financial interconnectedness.
