President Donald Trump spoke to the people of Warsaw, Poland, today where he promised to help reverse some of the damage done to the nation by Russia and Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Russia has been leveraging energy supplies over former Soviet controlled nations. Poland currently imports nearly 70 percent of its natural gas from Russia, which dominates much of the Eastern European energy market.
Gazprom, a Russian energy company that controls the world’s largest natural gas reserves, has engaged in punitive practices to keep both Poland and Ukraine in line. Restricted access to gas came following Poland’s support of Ukraine during their own energy struggles, although Russia denies there was any correlation.
On today’s “Chris Salcedo Show,” Chris Salcedo noted that “energy has been used as a weapon by Vladimir Putin,” and that Trump undermined that weapon in today’s address.
In his Warsaw speech, the president promised that America would provide liquefied natural gas to Poland. He also said the U.S. is “committed to securing your access to alternate sources of energy, so Poland and its neighbors are never again held hostage to a single supplier of energy.”
