UN ditches Wonder Woman as honorary ambassador

A few months ago, the U.N. selected DC Comics superhero Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador in order to advance the cause of empowerment of women and girls. This move was greeted by protests and petitions from those who saw the Amazonian warrior princess as an all-American sex symbol contributing to the objectification of women.

The backlash convinced the U.N. to prematurely end the Wonder Woman campaign, which has many feminist activists celebrating. The most widely-circulated petition that contributed to this change of course describes Wonder Woman as "a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee high boots — the epitome of a pin-up girl."

Doc Thompson, filling in for Glenn on "The Glenn Beck Radio Program," wonders which aspect of the character is causing the controversy: "They make that sound like it's a bad thing the way they write that. A large breasted white woman? If she was a smaller-breasted white woman, would they be OK with that? ... What part of it are they troubled by? Is it all of it?"
