Stuckey: Twerking is not an appropriate Easter service

Transformation Church in Oklahoma has become the center of online controversy after what some are calling a “blasphemous” performance put on during Pastor Mike Todd’s 2023 Easter service.

Clips of the performance have been shared across social media, featuring women twerking and dancing provocatively to modern pop songs with a backdrop that at some points features fire.

Allie Beth Stuckey watches the clips, and is at first lost for words: “I don’t even know what to say.”

“I’m not saying that all churches have to have the same forms of worship and the same kind of Easter service, but I do think that the church’s primary role is to glorify God and to edify believers with the word of God and with the gospel? ... Yes I do.”

However, she believes this performance did not accomplish that at all.

“It is entirely inappropriate. You have women basically twerking on stage.”

Stuckey then plays a clip of Pastor Mike Todd explaining why he began putting on these kinds of performances.

“I became the Pastor, and I didn’t know what a pastor did,” he says, recalling that he hadn't ever preached the Easter message, and he wasn't going to start then, so instead, he put on an Easter play.

“I said ‘We’re gonna go to the edge on this,’ and they said, ‘Pastor, how far on the edge are we gonna go?’ I said ‘We gonna’ do everything short of sin.’”

Stuckey responds, “If you don’t know what to do as a pastor, just read the Bible.”

“That’s actually the best sermon that you could ever preach because you know that every single word you say is inerrant and infallible.”

She continues, “We’re all human, and so we are prone to error but God’s word is not.”
