Newsweek attacks Melania and Ivanka for wearing high heels

The media has officially hit rock bottom. Fox News Insider reports that First Lady Melania Trump and First Daughter Ivanka Trump have been censured for wearing high heels. Such condemnation is beyond absurd and was delivered by Nina Burleigh of Newsweek. Burleigh apparently believes that high heeled shoes are “out of fashion” and if you let her tell it, the Trump women have no business wearing them.

Ironically, Burleigh’s censure of the Trump women directly clashes with the liberal, feminist preachings of female empowerment and the notion that women may do as they please. However, time after time, the radical left has proven that when they advocate for “women in power,” what they really mean is “leftist, liberal, anti-Trump women in power.”

An excerpt from Burleigh’s daft written piece reads as follows:

“Historically, the Trumpian women’s shoe of choice was invented not for women but for aristocratic men, men who would never have to work, and who didn’t have to walk much but were carried in litters or carriages. Paintings of Louis XIV, the Sun King, show him sporting red-soled heels, posing with one foot forward and pointed out— much like Ivana and Ivanka Trump in countless photographs over the years.”

The aforementioned text is beyond absurd, and Burleigh should be ashamed of herself for putting such nonsense into writing. Is she not aware of the plethora of women who wear high heels? High heels are a universal female fashion trend. If Melania and Ivanka Trump are in the wrong for wearing heels, then so is every woman across the world. As a matter of fact, Burleigh herself has most likely worn high heels.

Furthermore, the lack of feminist outrage over this unnecessary criticism of the First Lady and First Daughter is hypocritical, yet unsurprising. If a male Republican blasted, say, Chelsea Clinton for wearing high heels, feminists would be irate. They would claim women have the right to wear what they want without being shamed, which is correct. However, this sentiment applies to all women, not just liberal women; but since Melania and Ivanka Trump are the targets, feminists view them as fair game, thus their silence.

Burleigh’s original piece, which appears on Newsweek, was incredibly incoherent. Before bashing the Trump women, she discusses the history of heels, the internet’s various coverage of heels, and other points that are not quite clear. Later on, Burleigh admits that high heels look good on women, helping to accentuate innate curves and feminine body structures. The point of her entire piece is really unclear, as noted by many people in the comments section.

There has yet to be one positive remark in the Newsweek comments section for Burleigh’s strange article. Readers described her piece as “one of the more BIZARRE things I've read, ” and one woman even recommended Burleigh to “stay out of fashion and write of something with substance that matters” before calling Burleigh a “jealous hater.” If Burleigh has any wisdom at all, she will take the grounded criticism to heart and strongly rethink posting another piece of this nature.

In the future, if Burleigh criticizes the First Lady, First Daughter, or anyone else, she should ensure that her condemnation has merit. Criticizing someone on policy issues, personal statements, or other espoused beliefs is acceptable. The vilification of high heels is sad, and it makes Burleigh look bad, as many of her readers noted.

Burleigh aside, Newsweek ought to be ashamed for allowing such an asinine piece to reside on their website. Many people wonder why conservatives talk about fake news. Nina Burleigh and people who produce content like her are why. When Americans visit various news outlets, they are seeking real updates about what is happening in the world. They have absolutely no interest in an irrelevant blogger complaining about the shoe styles of Melania and Ivanka Trump.

The immense jealousy that Burleigh and others harbor for Melania and Ivanka Trump is unfortunate. Both women are extraordinarily beautiful, successful, and accomplished, despite how the media portrays them. Melania had a very successful modeling career and started her own jewelry line. Likewise, Ivanka has a clothing line and personal brand, Women Who Work. Quite frankly, Burleigh could learn a thing or two from the First Lady and First Daughter. As one reader commented, “what a stupid, ignorant, useless article.”

“So sad, Newsweek used to be a respected news magazine. To waste space and energy to demean a beautiful woman for her shoes... really. Your political agenda can't go any lower,” wrote another person in the Facebook comments section for Burleigh’s article.

Hopefully, the plethora of unpleasant feedback will serve as a lesson to Nina Burleigh and whoever is hiring writers at Newsweek. The more radical outlets become, the more they will alienate their base. Being opinionated is fine, as is stating one's views. However, when countless readers are complaining about the perpetuation of a political agenda, perhaps it is time to step back and rethink. Nina Burleigh’s condemnation of high heels was a reach. Both Melania and Ivanka Trump will undoubtedly continue to wear heels and look stunning when they do. Perhaps Burleigh would do well to purchase a pair herself.
