Steve Bannon wants to ‘praise and honor’ Trump – while destroying the GOP?

What happened?

In an election upset, Senate candidate Roy Moore beat out incumbent Luther Strange for the GOP primary runoff in Alabama. Moore will face the Democrat candidate, Doug Jones, in the general election to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Former White House adviser Steve Bannon campaigned and met with conservative groups to fuel support for Moore, the underdog GOP candidate in a deeply red state, and has characterized the victory as a win against the Republican establishment.

Is Bannon still on Team Trump?

Bannon has been doing a curious balancing act since he was removed from the Trump White House, vowing to be a thorn in the side of establishment Republicans while never speaking against the president himself.

“We did not come here to defy Donald Trump; we came here to praise and honor him,” he said at a rally Tuesday night ahead of the Senate election.

Bannon promised a “day of reckoning” coming for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as well as the GOP strategists who worked for Strange.

Glenn’s take:

“This is an eighth-grade romance gone wrong,” Glenn quipped. “If somebody would have said [“praise and honor”] about Barack Obama, my head would have popped.”

Glenn noted that Bannon didn’t just disagree with Trump but actively campaigned against his candidate.

“Last night, Donald Trump found out that his day of reckoning was indeed here, but he needs to understand it is courtesy of Steve Bannon,” he said.
