Gingrich wins the battle of insults

Newt Gingrich is one of those people you never want to throw an insult at. In a battle of "yo mama" jokes, he would clearly be the one who gets the loudest "Ooooooh!" from the audience for hitting his opponent deep. Actually, that's probably what the next debate will be like when he and Mitt Romeny are predictably positioned side-by-side at the podiums. They've already started.

In an interview with Fox News on Monday morning, Romney called on Gingrich to return the reported $1.6 million he earned as a consultant for mortgage giant Freddie Mac in 2006. Gingrich has said he was working as a historian for Freddie Mac, not a lobbyist. "That would make him the highest paid historian in history," Romney said.

Gingrich fired back later the same day: "I love the way [Romney] and his consultants do these things," he said, according to CBS News. "I would just say that if Gov. Romney would like to give back all of the money he's earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years at Bain, that I would be glad to listen to him." Then Gingrich kicked Romney in a freshly bruised shin: "And I bet you $10 -- not $10,000 -- that he won't take the offer," Gingrich said, referencing the off-the-cuff bet Romney offered Rick Perry during Saturday's debate.

He's ruthless.
