American journalist in Berlin at time of attack says text message 'saved' her life

An American woman who was at the Berlin, Germany, Christmas market when a person driving a truck plowed through a crowd of people, says a text message she received just moments before the massacre saved her life.

Shandana Durrani, a travel and lifestyle journalist who recently moved to Germany, recalled the horrific attack during an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" Tuesday.

"I was on my way out of the market after doing a little bit of shopping. I stopped to respond to a text message that I had gotten from a friend, and I think that’s basically what saved me from being hit," Durrani said.

She added that she then looked up from her phone and saw the truck plowing through a crowd of people. But when asked if she thought at the time it was a terror attack, Duranni said she didn't.

"I just thought that somebody had lost control of a truck and, you know, hit the curb and went over the curb," Durrani said.

"It happened so fast. It felt like slow-motion, but I think it was like 10, 15 seconds of it. I didn’t immediately think terror attack," she said.

The attack, for which ISIS has since claimed responsibility, killed at least 12 people and injured dozens of others.

German officials detained a suspect they believed might have been involved in the attack, but on Tuesday released the individual because there wasn't enough evidence. The driver of the truck is still at large.
