Former President George H.W. Bush now in ICU, Barbara Bush also hospitalized

Former President George H.W. Bush was hospitalized Saturday for shortness of breath, and reports Wednesday morning suggested Bush was doing well after breathing treatments had been administered.

However, the Associated Press reported Wednesday afternoon that Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath announced that 92-year-old Bush has now been admitted to the intensive care unit. Bush reportedly was diagnosed with pneumonia and had to undergo a procedure at Texas Medical Center in Houston to "protect and clear his airway," which required sedation, according to KTRK-TV. He is said to be stable and resting under observation.

Bush's wife, 91-year-old Barbara Bush, has also been hospitalized for fatigue and coughing, the former president's spokesman confirmed. The hospitalization at Houston Methodist Hospital is said to be a precautionary measure.

Bush, who already planned to miss President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration due to health reasons, sent Trump a letter last week expressing his apologies for missing the ceremony. "My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under. Same for Barbara. So I guess we’re stuck in Texas." Bush wrote.

"I want you to know that I wish you the very best as you begin this incredible journey of leading our great country," he added.
