Bill Maher calls Elizabeth Warren 'Pocahontas' during TV interview. Check out her reaction.

Republican President Donald Trump for a long while has been making fun of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) over her claim that she possesses Native American heritage.

Trump revived his famous one-word dig Friday, calling Warren "Pocahontas" during an NRA speech in Atlanta.

NBC News called Trump's words "a jab at her Native American ancestry."

Well, comedian Bill Maher must not have gotten the memo. Or maybe he did get it and didn't care.

Speaking to Warren face to face on his HBO program "Real Time" that night, Maher asked her why more working-class people still back Trump despite his tax plan that Maher said favored the wealthy.

"They're still with him. They're not with you," Maher told Warren. "Explain to me what that disconnection is."

Warren replied, "Actually, I'm gonna to push back. I disagree with you. When you talk —"

Maher cut off Warren's defense: "Well, his fans are not with you."

"Hold on," she insisted. But Maher nudged more: "Come on."

Warren tried again: "When we talk —"

Maher then moved in for the kill: "They don't like you, Pocahontas."

The decidedly liberal "Real Time" audience laughed in response — though in a kind of guarded, I-think-one-of-our-own-may-have-just-jabbed-a-beloved-progressive-politician-a-bit-too-hard way.

Maher smiled at Warren and laughed as well, presumably signaling to her that his jab wasn't an attack.

But Warren — hardly ever at a loss for words — fell silent and needed a few moments as the "Pocahontas" ribbing sank in. Check out her face just after:

It seemed as though Warren got the joke soon enough. She looked as though she was about to smile —

but she did not reply to Maher's joke  and instead soldiered on with her rhetoric:

Trump's "Pocahontas" remark on Friday elicited quite a bit of liberal outrage.

“Trump calling Warren Pocahontas is racist," Sam Stein, senior editor of politics at the Huffington Post, noted on Twitter. "We kind of gloss over it at this point. But this is the president being racist.”

But not everybody agreed.

“How can it be racist if she’s not Native American?” one Twitter user asked.

“Disagree completely. Warren is embellishing (or lying, your pick) Trump is calling her on her BS #PoliticalCorrectnessSucks,” another user said.

CNN's Jake Tapper offered a quote from a Native American friend of his who said Trump uttering "Pocahontas” is a racial slur — but Tapper added in his follow-up tweet that this same Native American friend noted that the Cherokee Nation "did a formal review and she is not a Cherokee citizen."
