Chris Matthews, driveling moron, is dead wrong on Jerusalem

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” show, Chris Matthews said President Trump made his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital Wednesday to pander to his evangelical Christian base in Alabama.

Matthews criticized Christians for being ignorant about the Arab-Israeli conflict, stating that Christians hold “mythical” religious beliefs about Israel.

“If you don’t give the Palestinians hope that they can have national integrity and have a capital where they believe it should be, you’re going to have an unending problem,” Matthews said, predicting there would be deaths as a response to Trump’s decision.

“Don’t think [Trump’s decision] is unrelated to Alabama next week. It is related,” Matthews said. “Because it’s the Christian evangelicals down there with their crazy ideas about Israel, which is – I don’t know, mythical – they don’t understand the situation over there and how tricky it is ethnically and tribally.”

“They don’t care because it’s a religious belief,” he added. “Trump’s playing to that this week, you just watch him.”

There are layers of moronic statements to unpack here. The Christian belief that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel is not a “mythical” or religious doctrine but is well grounded in historical fact.

Trump isn’t playing to any base with the historic announcement on Jerusalem. The president is recognizing the reality that the past 20 years of hoping for a peaceful two-state solution simply isn’t working, and is following the law in moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

The deaths that may result from Palestinian violence are not Trump’s fault, but the result of the evil character of the Palestinian government that does not recognize the Jewish people’s right to exist in their historical homeland.

The only “mythical” belief in the Arab-Israeli conflict is that there was ever such a thing as the sovereign state of "Palestine."
