Kevin Spacey tried to Weinstein the media — and it worked

Kevin Spacey apparently hoped that coming out as gay would distract from the allegation made against him by actor Anthony Rapp of making a “sexual advance” on Rapp when he was just 14 years old. To the great shame of the mainstream media, Spacey’s gambit paid off.

On Sunday, Buzzfeed published an interview with Rapp in which he detailed a 1986 encounter with Spacey in Spacey’s apartment. Rapp said Spacey, then 26, “picked me up … and then he lays down on top of me.”

“He was trying to seduce me,” Rapp said. “I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

Rapp was 14. He could not legally consent to having sex. Aware of the seriousness of this accusation, Spacey issued an “apology” on Twitter, in which he denied remembering the accused behavior, yet offered an apology for “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” Then, in a coup-de-grace, he came out as gay while hinting that there may be more accusations coming, as he wants “to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.”

In this quasi-apology, Kevin Spacey admitted it’s possible that he might have attempted to sexually assault a 14-year-old and then gave a Harvey Weinsteinesque promise to self-reflect and improve. But that’s not the focus of the media headlines. No sir. The real news is Kevin Spacey has finally come out as a gay man.

Just look at the headlines.

When the New York Times first reported “dozens” of allegations of sexual harassment and assault made against Harvey Weinstein, the liberal Hollywood mogul thought he could make the story go away by promising to “give the NRA my full attention” and teasing a new film about President Trump.

The play was simple. Weinstein thought that if he could remind Hollywood that he was on “their side,” things would return to normal and they would give him a pass on his disgusting behavior as they had done for years.

That didn’t work out for Harvey Weinstein. But where Weinstein failed, Kevin Spacey successfully changed the leading media narrative on the accusations made against him by invoking his membership in a special protected class of the progressive Left.

Instead of “Kevin Spacey is accused of attempted child molestation,” now the lead headline is “Kevin Spacey confirms a long-standing Hollywood rumor,” in the words of the New York Daily News. The fact that Spacey did not outright deny attempting to have sex with a 14-year-old boy is somehow less important than Spacey’s sexual preference for males.

If anyone else but a Hollywood actor had been accused of trying to have sex with a 14-year-old, and did not outright deny it, his career would be over instantaneously. But the mainstream media has already given Spacey a pass in their headlines.

This is why Hollywood’s victims feel powerless to accuse their attackers.
