Poll: Judge Roy Moore leads competitors in runoff

Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore is still the frontrunner for the Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. But the runoff after the Aug. 15 primary could be close.

A new poll by RRH Elections found that Roy Moore leads the Republican field with 31 percent support. Biting at his heels is the McConnell-backed sitting Senator Luther Strange, with 29 percent, and Congressman Mo Brooks, in third place with 18 percent.

There are 11 days until the primary. If a single candidate fails to win more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff election will be held between the top two candidates.

The poll found that Moore leads Strange 34-32, with 35 percent undecided, in a hypothetical runoff. A matchup between Moore and Brooks has Moore garnering 43 percent support to Brooks’ 20 percent, with 37 percent undecided.

A matchup between Strange and Brooks has Strange leading Brooks 42-22, with 36 percent undecided.

This poll of 426 likely Republican voters contains a 5 percent margin of error. While a runoff between Moore and Strange seems likely, the exact outcome of that likely race remains too close to call.
