Sarah Sanders whacks Comey: 'Dangerous,' 'doesn't have credibility'

Ahead of former FBI Director James Comey's "20/20" interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos Sunday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared on ABC News with Stephanopoulos and blasted Comey as a leaker and a liar.

“It's been very clear that James Comey is a self-admitted leaker,” Sanders said. “He lied to Congress; he's been inconsistent constantly.”

She called Comey's claim that he does not remember thinking about the political considerations of revealing he had reopened the Clinton investigation during a presidential election "outrageously unbelievable."

“The guy knew exactly what he was doing,” she told Stephanopoulos. “He thought Hillary Clinton would win, and he thought that this would give him some cover. He made these decisions based on the political landscape and not on the facts of the case.”

She characterized Comey's actions as "dangerous."

"When the person that is supposed to lead the highest law enforcement agency in our country starts making decisions based on political environments instead of on what is right and what is wrong, that's a really dangerous position. And I think that's one of the reasons there is such a huge bipartisan consensus that James Comey doesn't have credibility and shouldn't have been leading the FBI any longer."

Over the weekend, leading up to the airing of Comey's "20/20" interview, President Trump criticized Comey for leaking classified information and suggested he might deserve to go to jail.

Stephanopoulos asked if President Trump had instructed the Department of Justice to investigate Comey.

Sanders said she was not aware if President Trump had specifically asked the DOJ to investigate Comey for leaking classified information, but she added that if they feel "there was any wrongdoing" they should "certainly look into that."

Editor's note: An earlier version of this piece stated that Comey's interview was with "60 Minutes," rather than "20/20." CR regrets the error.
