Breaking: Trump signs an executive order requiring illegal immigrant parents to be detained with children
June 20, 2018
Update: At 3:09 p.m., the Associated Press reported that President Trump signed the executive order.
Original story below.
The Trump administration announced Wednesday that the president will sign an order requiring parents to be detained with their children if they are caught crossing into the U.S. illegally, Reuters reported.
The order will not end the administration’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy, which aims to prosecute all immigrants crossing the border illegally, but would “move parents with children to the front of the line for immigration proceedings,” the report said.
Trump told reporters Wednesday morning that “if you’re weak … the country’s going to be overrun with millions of people. And if you’re strong, then you don’t have any heart. That’s a tough dilemma. Perhaps I’d rather be strong.”
Watch:
The House of Representatives is still scheduled to vote on two proposed immigration bills on Thursday.
