UK government: No day off for Prince Harry’s wedding

The hype is real for the impending royal wedding of Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markle. So real, in fact, people in the U.K. are hoping for a day off in its honor.

No such luck — yet. A spokesman for British PM Theresa May said Monday that next year’s wedding will not be a national holiday.

"There are no plans for a Bank Holiday," the spokesman said, per the U.K. Independent. “There isn't a precedent in this area."

In the U.K., a “bank holiday” is a day when most government institutions and private businesses are closed, like a federal holiday in the U.S.

According to The Independent, there was such a holiday for the wedding of Princess Anne in 1973, one for the 2011 wedding day of Prince William to Kate Middleton, and one for the Prince of Wales’ marriage to Diana Spencer in 1981.

Can you imagine even the possibility of a day off from work in the United States for what is essentially a celebrity wedding?
