This amendment sponsored by Rep. Frelinghuysen (R-NJ), increased spending in the Hurricane Sandy bill by almost $34 billion. This legislation, combined with other legislation geared towards addressing damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, amounts to $60.4 billion in un-accounted spending. Significant portions of the funding in the legislation did not go towards Hurricane Sandy recovery but instead toward pet projects. Simply put, Congress used a natural disaster as an excuse to increase spending. The amendment passed 228 – 192 on Jan. 15, 2013 and the bill was later signed into law by the president.
