Whitlock: Donald Trump earned his crown of thorns, just like the rest of us

Like Gestas, the unrepentant thief, Donald Trump has pleaded to be taken down from the cross.

Our former president complained on his signature social media platform, Truth Social, about the criminal charges the state of New York is expected to file against him this week.

There is little doubt the charges being formulated against Trump are politically motivated and far more persecution than legitimate prosecution. New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg reportedly plans to try Trump for violating tax laws related to a $130,000 payoff to porn star Stormy Daniels. For a multibillionaire such as Trump, it’s the equivalent of arresting a factory worker for falsely writing off a $13 McDonald’s lunch.

It’s all rather biblical. Herod Antipas, Rome, Jewish leaders, and the people of Israel conspired to crucify Jesus Christ. Two thieves died with Jesus on Good Friday: Dismas and Gestas, the good thief and the unrepentant thief.

As modern secular elites eliminate Christianity from American culture, Donald Trump has cast himself as Jesus Christ, the persecuted stand-in for the American people.

In 2019, he tweeted a pic of himself with the words: “ In reality, they’re not after me, they’re after you. I’m just in the way.”

In 2020, he said, “I’m the only thing standing between the American dream and total anarchy, madness, and chaos, and that’s what it is.”

Earlier this month he said, “In 2016, I declared, ‘I am your voice.’ Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”

Trump has a savior complex. We need him to adopt a sacrifice and repentance complex. He needs to embrace the cross. We all do. Anyone with a sincere interest in saving America has to be willing to embrace persecution. That’s the time we’re living in. It’s the time we created.

I’m no different from Donald Trump. I took American freedom for granted. I reveled in the secular pleasures America affords in abundance and ignored the doings of the people who despise this country’s founding documents, principles, and values.

My negligence, irresponsibility, and immorality contributed to the eradication of Judeo-Christian culture in America.

I’m not alone. Neither is Trump. All but a tiny handful of American men lost the plot, abandoned our post, and surrendered the entire culture to secular elites.

Trump isn’t Jesus. He’s Gestas.

An unprecedented and corrupt cabal of Romans, Jewish leaders, Herod, and the people of Israel have nailed Trump to a cross to the left of Christianity. And rather than humble himself and repent, Trump is demanding that he be removed from the cross.

Gestas told Christ: “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.”

To the right of Jesus was Dismas. He told Christ: “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

That’s what we need to hear from Trump and all men. We need to acknowledge that our sin created this American mess. That’s what Trump doesn’t seem capable of realizing.

He’s 100% accurate about the corruption of the political swamp and the wickedness of his political enemies. Alvin Bragg is a pawn for George Soros and the Democrat Party. The allegations against Trump pale in comparison to the money China and Ukraine allegedly funneled to Joe and Hunter Biden. Trump’s illicit sexual behavior is tame in comparison to Bill Clinton’s extramarital activity and the claims Biden’s daughter made against her father in her diary. Corporate media is the definition of fake news.

Trump is right about all of it.

But he’s yet to realize his sin empowers their sins. He’s being silenced by his sin.

Any man who says he loves America and isn’t repenting of and abandoning his sin doesn’t really love America. He loves himself. He’s made himself an idol. He loves his sin more than he loves his country. He doesn’t really care about what type of country he leaves his children and grandchildren.

There are too many American men who love America’s fruit but are indifferent or hostile to the tree. The American tree is the Bible-inspired text contained within the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Leftists are hostile toward the tree. Conservatives are indifferent to the tree. Everybody wants the fruit. Few want to defend, protect, and honor the tree with obedience to God’s will.

We’re not in position to defend God’s will (and America’s founding principles) because our lives are too sinful. We live in fear of being exposed for our secret sins.

Repent and obey.

My philosophy the last five years has been: “Bearing witness requires courage, not perfection.”

I’m not going to allow my sin to stop me from testifying about Jesus Christ. People who don’t believe in God have weaponized sin to silence believers. In the age of social media, surveillance, camera phones, and internet tracking, sexual sin is easily discoverable. That’s why the left promotes sexual immorality. It’s leverage.

Secular elites are leveraging Trump’s sexual sin to eliminate him as a political threat. He must repent. We all must repent.

On April 15 in Nashville, I’m hosting a men’s summit. We’re going to repent. We’re going to remind each other of what we must do if we’re really serious about saving this country. It starts with acknowledging our role in destroying America and committing to avoiding the mistakes that got us here.

I’d love for Donald Trump to join us in Nashville. I’d love to explain to him that he and I earned the nails in our hands and feet and the crown of thorns on our heads.
