10 cops arrest pastor as he protests drag queen reading for kids; he spends Easter in jail — his latest stint behind bars for standing up to such events in Canada

Ten police officers were seen on video arresting a pastor while he was protesting a drag queen reading for kids in Calgary, Alberta, last week — and Pastor Derek Reimer ended up spending Easter in jail, his latest stint behind bars for standing up such events in Canada.

In February, Reimer was shoved out a door and knocked flat on his back after protesting a library's drag queen event — at which children were in attendance — and police charged him with a hate crime.

What are the details?

In this latest arrest, police converged upon Reimer in a parking lot Tuesday afternoon while he was protesting near a library hosting a Reading with Royalty event where drag queens and kings read stories to children, the Calgary Herald reported.

Police were seen carrying a handcuffed Reimer to a police vehicle while Reimer's supporters compared police to Nazis; at least 10 officers appeared to be involved in the pastor's arrest.

The paper said defense attorney Ben Allison on Thursday asked the Calgary Court of Justice that Reimer’s case be adjourned to this week while awaiting disclosure from prosecutor Matt Dalidowicz.

Allison told Justice Karen Molle that he won’t be able to address Reimer's bail until he receives the prosecution's information, the paper said, adding that meant Reimer would spend Good Friday and Easter Sunday in jail.

The case will resume Wednesday, the paper said, adding that the prosecution is seeking a summary conviction, which means charges are being treated as less serious and Reimer won’t be required to appear from the Calgary Remand Centre where he was being jailed.

In Tuesday's arrest, the paper said police arrested Reimer on an outstanding warrant in relation to eight new charges he faces involving incidents between March 25 and April 2, including five allegations that he breached previous release conditions, two of which caused a disturbance, as well as a single criminal harassment charge.

Police said Reimer caused disturbances March 27 and April 2 outside public libraries where Reading with Royalty events were occurring or scheduled to take place, the paper said, adding that the pastor in each incident used a microphone while “shouting hate speech."

The criminal harassment charge stems from a March 27 allegation that Reimer went to a library, asked to speak to the manager, and “proceeded to record an interaction where he made several derogatory comments, engaged in hate-speech, as well as harassing comments," the paper said, adding that Reimer's speech left the manager and staff “concerned for their safety.”

Reimer was released from custody a second time March 22 under conditions that he stay at least 300 meters from LGBTQ+ events, the paper said, adding that Reimer is listed as a pastor with Mission 7, which focuses on “house church” and street preaching as well as “feeding the poor, preaching and praying,” according to its website.
