"We're broke."
The protesters "have every right to be heard," Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker insisted Friday evening, but their protests will "not drown out" the taxpayers who elected him to make changes.
In a live press conference, the recently embattled governor doubled down on his challenge to Democrats in the state senate who fled the state to avoid a vote on his budget proposal, insisting it's their job to be in Madison.
"We're broke," the governor admitted of his state, adding that his campaign for office promised "bold" changes and that's just what he's going to do:
The union protests at the state capitol attracted some big names to the fight Friday. Former Sen. Russ Feingold and Rev. Jesse Jackson urged workers to continue fighting to protect their collective bargaining privileges, comparing the protests in Madison to the revolution in Egypt.
Additionally, AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka channeled his inner William Wallace, declaring to the crowd that Gov. Walker "can't have our freedom!"
