It's well known that Speaker of the House John Boehner is a regular smoker. He's defended it in the past and said he's not going to quit. But even knowing all that doesn't mean it isn't a little odd to actually see him lighting up. And it's even more odd to see him lighting up on the South Lawn of the White House.
But that's what happened yesterday when Boehner attended the annual congressional picnic:
The AP has more about the event:
President Barack Obama is hosting lawmakers for a White House tradition - the annual congressional picnic that gives lawmakers a chance to put aside their partisan fights and pick up plates of hot dogs and pies. This year the theme on the South Lawn was State Fair, and booths offered ice cream sundaes, kettle corn and even pie throwing.
Many lawmakers both Democratic and Republican attended Wednesday, including Obama's chief congressional antagonist, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.
In brief remarks Obama said he hoped the spirit of community evident at the picnic would carry over into other days, and despite their differences people would remember all are part of the American family.
