Jon Stewart Attacks Atheists Over Ground Zero Cross Lawsuit: 'Why Do You Give a Sh*t?

"It has come to mean something to people who view it as a symbol of comfort."

Last night, comedian Jon Stewart weighed in on the Ground Zero cross controversy. More specifically, he targeted the lawsuit that a group of atheists is waging in an effort to prevent the cross' display at the soon-to-open 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.

Stewart took a stance in support of the cross' display and against those opposing it, asking atheists:

"...why do you give a sh*t? That cross is an artifact. It was found at Ground Zero. It has come to mean something to people who view it as a symbol of comfort."

These comments mirror those of New York City Michael Bloomberg, whose open support for the cross The Blaze has documented. Mediaite has more about Stewart's comedic rant against the atheists opposed to the project:

[Stewart mocked]...the president of the American Association of Atheists for making “even those indifferent to our cause” hate them. Given that the atheist symbol was the atom, Stewart proposed replacing the cross in a way that would satisfy the devout and the heretic: instead of a cross made up of tiny atoms, an atom made up of tiny crosses.
