Alan Colmes to Santorum: I'm Sorry for 'Hurtful Comment' About Handling of Baby's Death

"a cheap shot"

Yesterday, the Blaze reported on the heated on-air exchange between National Review Editor Rich Lowry and liberal commentator Alan Colmes. Lowry took particular issue with the words that Colmes used to describe the way in which Rick Santorum and his wife handled the death of their infant Gabriel back in 1996. Now, following the spat, Colmes has apologized to the Santorum family and admitted wrongdoing.

On Twitter yesterday, the leftist commentator wrote, "just spoke to @ricksantorum. He and Karen graciously accepted my apology for a hurtful comment."

Earlier in the day, Colmes had offended Santorum when he said, "Once [voters] get a load of some of the crazy things [Santorum's] said and done, like taking his two-hour-old baby who died right after childbirth home and played with it for a couple of hours so his other children would know that the child was real…"

Lowry interjected and called his commentary "a cheap shot," though Colmes initially defended the statement. Now, he's singing a very different tune. Following his apology and the subsequent tweet announcing it, he is embracing the notion that he made a mistake.

Below, watch Santorum discus the incident with FOX News' Sean Hannity (around the 4:40 mark):

Earlier today, Lowry tweeted about Santorum's graciousness in accepting Colmes' apology:

Following this message, Colmes responded, praising Lowry's graciousness as well:

So, it seems the drama has come to a close -- just in time for the Iowa caucuses.
