Santorum Takes Oklahoma, Tennessee in Super Tuesday Victories

Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum notched his first Super Tuesday victories in Oklahoma, and now Tennessee, Fox News projected.

National Journal adds:

It was an important symbolic victory over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for Santorum, whose campaign surged after victories in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota on Feb. 8 but hadn't won a state since then. Romney was projected the winner in Virginia, Vermont and Massachusetts, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was awarded his home state of Georgia.

The Sooner State is considered one of the reddest, more conservative than Tennessee, which was also one of the 10 states voting on Super Tuesday. Gingrich had hoped to prevail in Oklahoma to show strength in the South, but Santorum’s appeal to evangelicals helped him carry the day.

The former Pennsylvania senator has become a favorite among Evangelicals and social conservatives and won the Iowa caucuses in early January.
