Tampa police spend $500K on park ranger-like uniforms for GOP convention
August 22, 2012
For the sake of looking "more approachable," the Tampa Police Department has spent roughly half a million dollars on khaki uniforms for the Republican National Convention next week.
"It's obviously cooler for the officers, and it has a more approachable look to it," Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor told USA Today.
The need for a more "approachable" police force comes as security for the party conventions has increased, creating a more militarized atmosphere. Congress granted both Tampa and Charlotte (where the DNC will be held) $50 million each to spend on security for the conventions.
