Impact of Republican convention on voters: a wash [Gallup, 9/3]: Americans are split on the impact the Republican convention had on their vote. Forty percent say it has made them more likely to vote for Mitt Romney. Thirty-eight percent said it made them less likely to vote for him.

...Especially in Florida [PPP, 9/2]: The GOP's convention was held in Florida but Romney's poll numbers have seen no change from it. Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney 48-47, as was the case five weeks ago, which is the last time PPP ran a poll targeting Florida.

...But maybe not in North Carolina [Elon University/Charlotte Observe, 9/3]: "Republican Mitt Romney appears to have gotten his bounce from his party’s national convention – at least in the state hosting the Democratic convention..." The poll shows Romney leading President Obama 47 percent to 43 percent in North Carolina.

Taxing [Rasmussen, 8/28]: "... 41% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for a candidate who promised to oppose all tax increases. But 43% would vote instead for a candidate who raised taxes only on the rich."

Two things Americans say you need most to be middle class... [Pew, 8/31]: "Nearly nine-in-ten adults (86%) say a person needs a secure job to be considered part of the middle class..." Coming in second with 66 percent, health insurance. "[J]ust 45% say the same about owning a home, 37% about a college education and 28% about financial investments."

The horse race [RCP average, 9/3]: An average of national polls shows Obama at 46.4 percent and Romney at 46.3 percent.
