When a person has fought under the American flag, one would generally expect that person to have a deep and abiding affection for that flag. As such, if they chose to hang the flag outside their home, it presumably wouldn't be much of a shock to the neighbors, given that person's background.
But don't tell that to the manager of a particular apartment complex in California, who asked a veteran to take down the American flag hanging from his apartment balcony on September 11th because it might offend people who "didn't believe in the American flag."

An Iraq war veteran was asked by the property manager to take down the American flag that he hung from his California apartment balcony for 9/11.Amy Grossman, the veteran’s wife, said, “She wanted it to be removed so that it didn’t offend anybody who didn’t believe in the American flag.”
