John Boehner: 'We're Nowhere' on Fiscal Cliff Talks

With less than a month to go, House Speaker John Boehner said White House and GOP negotiators have made no progress on talks to avert the "fiscal cliff."

"I would say we're nowhere. Period. We're nowhere," Boehner (R-Ohio) said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday."

Sharp tax hikes and major spending cuts are set to automatically go into effect unless Congress and the White House can reach a deal before the end of the year.

Boehner said "there's clearly a chance" of going over the cliff if the sides can't come to an agreement.

"We've put a serious offer on the table by putting revenues up there," he said. "But the White House has responded with virtually nothing."

Boehner said President Barack Obama "knows what our proposals are" but it's not clear what but that Obama himself is willing to do.

"The president's idea of negotiations is 'roll over and do what I ask,'" he said.

Boehner said he was "flabbergasted" and said he told Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner "you can't be serious" when Geithner outlined Obama's budget deal offer on Thursday, which included $1.6 trillion in increased tax revenues.

Boehner said that he "might be an easy guy to get along with, affable," but he's "determined to solve our debt problem."

"We are going to deal with America's debt problem...we're not going to kick this can down the road again," he said. "I don't want any part of going over the cliff, I'm going to do everything I can to avert it, but we are going to solve this debt problem."
